Review: Wilde For Her by Tonya Burrows

wilde for herTitle: Wilde For Her

Author: Tonya Burrows

Year of publication: 2013

The heroine: Homicide detective Eva Cardoso

The hero: Ex-homicide detective/private investigator Camden Wilde

The blurb: Former homicide detective Camden Wilde has been in love with his ex-partner, Eva Cardoso, for longer than he cares to admit. Not that it matters. She’s shoved him into the friend zone, and after living through the hell of his parents’ violent deaths, Cam’s unable to give her the idyllic life she secretly desires.

Eva’s never met a person who hasn’t let her down. Cam may be sex personified, but he’s the only man she can trust, and there’s no way she’ll risk their friendship on the off-chance they could be more. Especially not after the one scintillating night she’s trying—and failing—to forget.

When a murder-for-hire contract on his head lands Eva on his doorstep, Cam knows it’s time to put up or shut up. He’s done biding his time, and he’ll be damned if he lets the delectable detective ignore what’s between them, no matter the cost.

Standalone or series: This is book two in the Wilde Security series, but can be read as a standalone

The review: If I thought book one was good, book two was even better! I utterly adored Cam Wilde from start to finish and I suspect he will be my favourite Wilde brother.

Cam used to be a homicide detective and his partner was Eva Cardoso. He’s been in love with her for five years now, a long time, but has never made a move because she’s his best friend and he doesn’t want to lose her friendship. When she agrees to attend his brother’s wedding in Key West as his date, they run into her ex at the bar. Eva and Preston broke up six months previously because she desperately wants something she’s never shared with anyone before, not even Cam: a family. A home. She thought she’d get that with Preston, but when he made it clear marriage was not for him she ended it.

So it burns when Preston turns up with his new fiancee. Eva drinks far too much and when Cam gets her back to her room safely, they end up in bed and have drunken sex. Eva is so freaked out by what’s happened the next morning that she takes off and goes home without even speaking to Cam.

Things are awkward at first, but they soon manage to sort things out somewhat. Cam’s feelings for Eva haven’t changed, and she needs him too much to shut him out of her life completely. She didn’t come from a great childhood – her drug addict mother made things very hard for Eva and her siblings.

Cam’s got other things to be dealing with – someone has taken out a contract on him. He has to involve his brothers, if only because he has an identical twin in Vaughn, and he hates the idea of Vaughn being mistaken for him and getting hurt. When Cam’s informant turns up dead, time is running out for Cam and his brothers to find out who wants him dead.

Eva becomes involved in the investigation because of the dead informant, and she finds herself terrified of losing Cam. Will she finally let down the walls around her heart to give it Cam and trust him not to break it? You’ll just have to read and find out.
