The blurb: At age twenty-nine, Piper Daniels is having the longest dry spell of her life. When she agrees to be set up on a blind date, she never expects it to end with the hottest sex of her life.

But when she discovers that her very well-endowed secret lover is also her new boss, heartless womanizer and cutthroat CEO Jackson Dane, she chalks it up to a one-time mistake and puts up her best professional front. But Jackson isn’t used to rejection, and if Piper thinks it’s going to be easy to move on from their tryst, she’s underestimated his determination.

Standalone or series: Book twelve in the Misadventures with… series, but can be read as a standalone. It looks like each book is by a different author.

The review: Another great book from Kendall Ryan; I devoured this in less than a day (it was only released yesterday!).

Piper Daniels has left Chicago and headed to New York to start her life over after being dumped by the man she thought she’d marry. She’s got herself an apartment and starts a new job on Monday. Her younger sister, Hailey, knows all too well what Piper is like, so while they’re chatting on the phone, Hailey sets up a profile for Piper on a dating site (not mentioned, but sounds like Tinder). While they’re still talking, Piper gets a match from a man named Jackson, and Hailey sets up dinner the next night.

Jackson Dane is the CEO of a real estate company that buys and flips property and deals with mergers. He comes from nothing: raised in the foster system with no family, he worked hard to buy his first place, which he renovated and flipped. He hasn’t had sex for two whole weeks and has just lost his eighth personal assistant in three months, so he agrees to let the HR manager find a replacement and goes onto a dating website to find a woman to have sex with. When he comes across Piper’s profile, something about it draws him in and he messages her. He makes it clear he’s after casual sex and she responds positively.

When they meet up the next night, Piper is as lovely in person and she confides that not only did she not set up her profile, she hasn’t even looked at it – or his. She’s drawn to him like a magnet and decides that if she’s ever going to start her life over, then having sex with an attractive man isn’t a bad way to get it going. So they go to the rooftop of a property he owns, where it’s been renovated into a community space for the building’s future occupants, and they succumb to their desire for each other.

They can’t stop thinking about each other, so when Piper turns up for her new job as personal assistant to the CEO of a property company and finds it’s Jackson, she knows she can’t work for him. She goes to walk out, but he persuades her that they can act like mature adults and work together professionally. Since her bank account is dwindling, she agrees to stay.

When she sees Jackson’s office, she’s appalled – it’s a mess and his calendar is all over the place. So while he’s at a meeting, she completely changes everything so he can follow his calendar and she’s on top of all of his commitments. Jackson baulks a bit at first, but he knows Piper is excellent at her job and he needs her, so he lets her take over.

After the first week, Jackson can’t stand it anymore and he calls Piper into his office late on the Friday night to offer her a proposal – they still work together professionally, and in their personal time they have sex with no commitment. Piper agrees on one condition – they are monogamous. Jackson says no at first, but realises he has to have her, so he agrees. After that, they spend their days working together and meeting for sex at lunch time or at night. It’s when they’re faced with the possibility of losing an important merger that could cost some of Jackson’s staff their jobs that he comes to realise Piper cares about him, and it has become more than sex for him, too. They go out on a date to the art museum, where Jackson tells her about his childhood, and it’s not long after that Piper realises she’s fallen for him.

Then something happens. I won’t say what, because it’s a big spoiler, but it’s something that makes Piper quit her job, end the relationship and flee back to Chicago. Jackson, who has by now also realised he loves Piper, follows her despite her telling him not to, and then he finds out why she left. They have a fight and are miserable without each other, and eventually Hailey talks Piper into going back to NYC and explaining to Jackson why she did what she did. She slides a letter under his door and he manages to catch her before she leaves. They sort everything out and he tells her he loves her. You then find out what happened to them in the epilogue. Another awesome book from Kendall – make sure you read it!
